Show Notes
John Pike founded the Wilmington chapter of Surfers Healing, an organization to help expose children with autism to the wonderful, calming and therapeutic world of surfing. This mission is near and dear to John’s heart as a father of a child who was diagnosed with autism at two years old. As with any parent, John searched for resources and community to broaden the horizons of his son. Thus, Surfers Healing came to town.
John discusses autism as a diagnosis and shares his journey with us. He divulges his philosophies and gets down to the nitty gritty discussing racial justice and the stigma surrounding autism in minority communities. Surfers Healing is always free and runs off of dedicated, competent and compassionate volunteers, who are also amazing surfers. If you see the dolphin, that’s Surfers Healing.
John, in all of his extra time, also started Different Not Less Charters. He utilizes his captain’s license to expose his “Autism Ohana” to inshore fishing, sunset cruises or just a ride on the water. Links below for all resources mentioned in this podcast episode.
